Oh LCF... :)

The magic has returned. LCF, I love you.

After a difficult first term punctuated by settling in angst, confusion and frustration, I left London for the holidays somewhat disillusioned with the London College of Fashion. Now, after two days of my second term, I feel happier than ever.

Stepping back inside the university buildings yesterday I felt completely refreshed and enthused. Greeting coursemates after weeks apart made me realise how many friends I have made, and how lucky I am to be part of a small and friendly group.

Monday's lectures summed up for me exactly why I am here. The subject of Monday lectures is given the broad title of 'cultural studies', a term that doesn't do justice to the breadth and depth of topics covered. From fashion history to the issues of gender and dress, this is the substance behind the frills and pussy bows. However much I may love the flashing lights and delicious aesthetics of the industry, this is the real foundation of my love for fashion. In just one day we were given a brief overview of the history of the female form and discussed feminism in relation to clothes. I was so inspired I then spent an hour in the library and left laden with books.

In the afternoon it was to a classroom on the roof terrace looking over Oxford Street where we had a debate about Wonderbra: empowering or enslaving? As we debated (second from baking in my list of favourite activities is probably a good debate) out the window the sun was setting over London. For me it doesn't get much better than this: in a city I love, studying a subject I am passionate about.

I am in such a good mood that this morning I set to work on one of my new year's resolutions, and jogged my way around Victoria Park. And after another excellent lecture today I came home so full of energy that there was only one way to calm me down. Yes, that's right, the pink apron came out again. It was time to bake.

  1. Hi Libby, I happened to stumble across your blog and I think it's really inspiring how you work your way towards what you really want. Since you are a student at LCF, can I check with you is it possible for FdA students to top-up one year for a BA in something different from what they previously studied? eg, an FdA in Fashion Buying and Merchandising to a BA in Bespoke Tailoring? Or can I only get a BA in Fashion Buying and Merchandising? Thanks for your time! I wish you all the best in becoming Vogue's Editor. (;

  2. Hi there, thank you so much for your kind comment. I'm afraid I'm not entirely sure about the courses but I think it is possible to do a BA in a different course to your foundation degree, although I suppose it depends on each individual course and what they are looking for from their applicants. Sorry I couldn't be more help - I would suggest just calling the LCF student services as they are very helpful.

    Best of luck to you too and thanks

  3. Libby! I've been reading all of your blogs and I couldn't be more excited for you. I love what you're doing and I love the way you write - such imagery. So worth-reading. Recently, I was accepted into the BA Fashion Journalism course at LCF! I'm 17 and from Houston, Texas, so you can only imagine how thrilled I am. But I'm also a bit nervous. I have no clue of what to expect! Can you tell me anything about the Fashion Journalism course (classes, the people, work opportunities, the teachers, etc.)? Feel free to contact me on my Facebook page. Thanks!
